Treatment of plantar warts or papillomas

Plantar warts, also known as papillomas, are common skin conditions on the feet caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). These skin lesions, although benign, can be painful and uncomfortable, especially when walking or applying pressure to the affected area. They typically appear on the sole of the foot or on the toes, both in pressure areas and in areas without direct pressure.

Treatments and Prevention

Addressing plantar warts is essential not only to relieve pain and discomfort but also to prevent them from spreading to other areas of the foot or to other people, due to their contagious nature. Treatment depends on the severity of the lesion and may include:

  • Topical treatments, primarily caustic.
  • Cryotherapy (freezing), which is applied directly to the wart.
  • Advanced therapies such as surgical removal or laser therapy.

Additionally, there are preventive measures that help reduce the risk of contagion and recurrence, such as keeping the feet clean and dry, wearing breathable footwear, and avoiding sharing personal items such as towels or shoes.

It is important to remember that, without proper treatment, these warts can persist for months, or even years. If you notice the appearance of plantar warts, consult a podiatrist for an evaluation and the most appropriate treatment for your case.
